Top 10 Family Friendly Christmas Movies

It’s nearly impossible to think of Christmas without thinking of Christmas movies. Here are our top 10 family friendly films. Have you watched them yet this year?

1. Home Alone

When the McCallister family left on their Christmas vacation they forgot one thing! Locking up the house, timer on the lights? No, it was their son Kevin. Arghhhhhhhh! As family Christmas films go, this is the ultimate laugh-out-loud feel-good classic. As the strapline says, ‘A family comedy, without the family.’ Come on, how many times have you seen it?

2. The Polar Express

Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s modern holiday classic of the same name, this visually stunning film captures the imagination. A small boy who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, especially as his family insist it’s all a myth, is visited by a mystical train that takes him on a journey to the North Pole to meet the man himself!

3. The Snowman

Who hasn’t wanted their snowman to come to life? Who hasn’t wanted their snowman to take them to see Father Christmas since seeing this movie? No words are uttered in the entire film and the only ones you hear are from the absolute classic piece of music Walking in the Air performed by Peter Auty not Aled Jones as is often believed! Aled actually re-recorded the song for a TV ad and that’s what shot his version to fame!

4. The Santa Claus

If you accidentally kill Santa it’s only right that you take his place, right? Tim Robbins is brilliant in the role as he comes to terms with becoming the jolly fellow in the big red suit. Sentimental yet funny and if you weren’t all already excited about Christmas, this will turn up the excitement factor to 11!

5. Elf

This film is the one that seems to reach Christmas fever pitch on social media every year! It is quite simply a classic. Buddy, a baby from an orphanage, stows away in Santa’s sack and is raised by elves! When he finally finds out as an adult that he isn’t an elf, Santa lets him go to New York to find his birth father! If you haven’t seen it before, it’s an absolute must, so this holiday, discover your inner elf. If you have, we know you’re going to watch it again, and again…

6. The Grinch

“Blast this Christmas Music, it’s joyful and triumphant!” Jim Carrey is the Grinch and he is simply outstanding in this role. Everyone in Whoville loves Christmas, except The Grinch. He doesn’t like the Whos very much either, so plans to steal their Christmas, but can a sweet little girl change all that? It’s as magnificent to watch as it is to laugh at.

7. Frozen

It’s no surprise that Frozen made $1.219 billion dollars at the box office. Goodness knows how much it has made since then in merchandise etc. Love it or hate it (you know you don’t hate it really), it’s the perfect Disney movie in every way. A true modern classic and one that will definitely stand the test of time.

This was the first trailer for the film, which didn’t actually feature any scenes from the movie. It’s genius and should be watched as many times as you’ve probably been subjected to the feature film!

8. Muppets Christmas Carol

The Muppets rarely fail to deliver and this, their interpretation of the classic Charles Dickens tale is fantastic, especially with the fabulous Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge. This was the first Muppet film made after Jim Henson’s death and is therefore not surprising that it’s a little darker than previous outings… yet still filled with so much love!

9. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

We’re laughing just thinking about this one. If you’ve got a loft hatch and a ladder then you’ll be reminded of the film every time you open it! Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is aiming to have a perfect family Christmas but you just know things won’t go his way. There are so many laughs we’re not sure which ones to highlight so perhaps it’s best just to go watch it again. If you’re not laughing in anticipation of the funny scenes, you haven’t seen it enough times!

10. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Even the trailer starts with a list of adjectives… It might be black and white, it might be old, but there’s a reason this film nearly always makes it onto every much-watch family Christmas list. Do you believe in Santa Claus?
